An essential guide on how to wash and care for your socks so they last longer.

Prepping your socks for the wash

1. Separate your socks and turn them inside out, this makes sure the detergent gets to all odour-causing bacteria that might be inside your socks after wearing them.

2. Ensure colours are the same as each other. Try to wash your socks with similar colour items and avoid washing very dark colours with very light colours.

Cotton

1. A mesh laundry bag is always a great way to wash your socks. Not only does it avoid snagging, but it also prevents loose cotton particles from being caught in the washing machine, keeping our environment cleaner.

2. Always wash on a light cycle at 30-40 degrees using a mild detergent.

A tumble dryer can be used on our cotton socks, but you can also hang dry which means using less energy and is kinder on the environment.

Hanging socks in pairs is a great way to avoid losing any!

Wool

1. Your wool socks can be washed by hand or you can use a mesh laundry bag.

2. Always wash them on a gentle cycle wool wash at 30 degrees using a mild detergent or hand wash.

3. Do not tumble dry; instead, dry flat or hang to dry in pairs.

Wear and care

If you love wearing your socks indoors, try wearing indoor shoes or slippers to reduce wear on your socks and make them last longer.

Darning

If small holes appear in your socks over the years but they're generally fine, darning is a great way to keep them going for a bit longer. It can add a fun bit of personalisation to a much-loved pair too.

How to darn your socks

If you notice a thinning area or a hole in your socks, you can darn them to repair the damage. Darning is a simple mending technique that fills in thinning fibres or patches where holes have formed. By using yarn to cover the holes, you can extend the life of your socks. You can choose yarn in a similar colour to blend in and make the repair less noticeable, or get creative with a contrasting colour for a unique look.

Saying goodbye to your socks

When this sad moment comes, hopefully not for many years, it's good to get rid of your socks responsibly. There are a few options...

1. Take them to a material recycling point so they can be turned into something else.

2. Make a sock dog. Its a fun way to upcycle your socks!
