Welcome to this edition of In Good Company, where we love to meet and celebrate the people who inspire us. This month, we meet Peter Kinnaird @peterkinnaird— originally from Northern Ireland and now based in Los Angeles — whose path from film and the music industry into the world of property reflects a life shaped by instinct rather than plan. With a lasting passion for music, style, tennis and fishing, Peter’s outlook is grounded in consistency, with a particular love for fifties-inspired Americana and the visual world of classic jazz-era design.

Can you tell is a little about yourself - where you’re based, what you do, what you’re passionate about?

My name is Peter Kinnaird and I live in Los Angeles with my wife and son; I grew up in Northern Ireland but have lived here since the late 80s. I work in the property world. I am passionate about style, music, tennis and fishing. I have always been interested in those things and have yet to grow out of them!!

How did you come to do what you do now? Was it always the plan?

It was never the plan too work in real estate; I studied film at University and then worked in the music business throughout the 90s. After my last record company job ended, I was at a loss and thought I would briefly do property sales while I waited for the next music opportunity. Twenty years late here I am! I do miss some aspects of my prior career but don’t miss the late nights etc. A bit of a younger person’s game.

How would you describe your personal style in three words?

“Fifties inspired Americana” might be an apt description I suppose. I have always loved American design of the late 50s and early 60s - the pinnacle of design for me. The covers of jazz albums of the era - Blue Note etc providing incredible images and inspiration. Oddly, I wear Paraboot shoes most of the time - a French brand that have little connection to the US but fit in with the aesthetic that I love.

A book, film, or song you always come back to?

The Broad Majestic Shannon by The Pogues. This song has always uplifted me and provided hope in darker times. I am a huge fan of Shane MacGowan’s songwriting; there is a fragility and poetry behind the gruff exterior. Sadly missed.

Early bird or night owl?

Early bird, for better or for worse. I get up very early and go to bed early. A bit of a reversal from my youth. There is a wonderful calmness, getting up before the rest of the house and enjoying a cup of coffee. The day always seems so full of possibility at that time.

Last thing that made you laugh?

I recently rewatched some episodes of Peep Show - just superb, hilarious writing and performance. I had forgotten just how funny it could be. As with the best comedy, I can identify with the predicaments and sentiments of the protagonists all too well.

Special thanks to Peter for taking part In Good company. We hope you loved hearing about him as much as we did.
